Wanted: Junior sports reporters to write about the Beijing Paralympic Games

27 August 2008

OTTAWA (August 27, 2008) – Canadian students can follow their dreams of being a sports reporter by writing short features or news about the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Summer Games as part of a national contest run by the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC). The articles should be written from a personal perspective.

The writers of the top three entries will get to meet and interview a Paralympic athlete who competed in Beijing. The Paralympian will also speak to the class or school of the winning reporter about his/her experiences in Beijing.

The winning articles will be posted on the website of the CPC’s online schools program, which is sponsored by Petro-Canada and is called It’s the Real Deal, and published in the Paralympic Insider e-newsletter that is distributed to over 2,000 subscribers.

The free contest is open to students in grades four to eight, but entries must come from students enrolled in a recognized Canadian school.

“The Junior Reporters program will help students across the country get into the Paralympic spirit,” said Canadian Team Chef de Mission Debbie Low. “Paralympic sport is about sheer athletic determination and skill. We’re looking forward to being inspired by Canada’s elite-level athletes with a physical disability as they compete at the upcoming Paralympic Games.”

Entries must be received no later than October 6 at 5 p.m. ET, and can be emailed to education@paralympic.ca or mailed to Junior Reporters, Canadian Paralympic Committee, 85 Albert Street, Suite 1401, Ottawa, ON, K1P 6A4.

For complete contest details, go to www.paralympiceducation.ca. Submissions will judged by a jury of CPC and Petro-Canada members.

The “It’s the Real Deal” Paralympic Schools Program aims to help raise awareness of Paralympic sport and athletes with a physical disability.

The Beijing Paralympic Summer Games run from September 6-17, 2008 in China.
