Third world record for Summer Mortimer at Can\Am swimming championships

13 December 2010

ETOBICOKE, Ont. (December, 12, 2010) – Summer Mortimer of Ancaster, Ont., continued to sizzle at the nine-country Can\Am para swimming championships on Saturday lowering her third world record of the meet with a victory in the women’s 50 freestyle in the S10 classification.
Mortimer, a 17-year-old grade 12 high school student, won the race in 28.30 seconds lowering her previous world mark of 28.35 set this past summer at the world championships in the Netherlands. At those worlds, Mortimer won four gold, all in world record time.

“I’m very relaxed for the races and that’s helping me a lot to produce my very best performances,” said Mortimer, who beat her world marks in the 100 freestyle and 200 backstroke on Friday and also won her 200 IM Saturday. “I really wanted to see how fast I can go, and now I just want to keep beating my world records.”

Donovan Tildesley of Vancouver, a visually impaired swimmer also collected wins in the 50 freestyle and 200 IM in the men’s S11 class.

“I was pretty concerned after my performances in the preliminaries,” said Tildesley. “But I knew I felt great and for the finals I just tried to get into the moment. It wasn’t my best times but I was happy with how I bounced back.”

Competition ends Sunday at the Etobicoke Olympium. Preliminaries are at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 4:30 p.m. local time. Full results are available on-line at https://www.swimming.ca/liveresults/10SpeedoCanAm/
