Six more medals for Canadian swimmers at Para Pan Pacs

12 August 2011

EDMONTON – Canada won six more medals on Thursday at the inaugural Para Pan Pacific Swimming Championships including gold for Amber Thomas of Drayton Valley, Alta., and silver for Benoit Huot of Montreal and Morgan Bird of Calgary.

After two days of competition Canada has four gold, six silver and eight bronze.

Thomas earned her gold in the women’s 100 butterfly in the S11 disability category. It was her third victory of the competition.

In the other 100 fly races, Bird also stepped on the podium for a second straight day finishing second to Jessica Long of the U.S. Valérie Grand’Maison of Montreal took the bronze in the S13 race while Katarina Roxon of Stephenville, N.L., and Jenna Skieneh of Windsor, Ont., were fourth and fifth in the S9.

‘’The 100 fly is no longer a Paralympic event so I don’t train as much for it,’’ said Grand’Maison. ‘’Still it was a good opportunity to see what kind of shape I’m in. I finished a lot stronger than the other girls but I lack a lot of speed at the beginning of my race.’’

Huot, a three-time Paralympic champion, nearly reeled in arch-rival Andre Brasil of Brazil in the men’s 400-metre freestyle in the S10 disability but just fell short clocking 4:11.26 for his second silver of the competition. Brasil won in 4:11.05. Isaac Bouckley of Port Hope, Ont., was fourth.

Also in the 400 freestyle, Devin Gottel of Antigonish, N.S., was fourth in the S12 while Kyle McMahon of Victoria and Scott Patterson of North Vancouver were sixth and seventh in the S7 race.

In the women’s S7 50 butterfly, Sarah Mehain of Vernon, B.C., was third while Brianna Nelson of Victoria and Stephanie McDougall of Maple Ridge, B.C., were fourth and eighth.

‘’That race felt really good,’’ said Mehain, 16. ‘’I did what I needed to get on the podium. I wanted to get a strong start and kept strong throughout the race. I really look forward to training hard and improving.’’

In the men’s 50 freestyle, Jean-Michel Lavalliere of Quebec City took the bronze in the S7, Danial Murphy of Bedford, N.S., was fourth in the S5, Michael Diering of North Vancouver and Brian Hill of Montreal fifth in the S9 and S12 and Bouckley and Maxime Rouselle of St- Alexandre, Que., eighth in the S10 and S14.

No Canadians reached the podium in the men’s 200 freestyle. Murphy was fourth while Adam Rahier of Nanaimo, B.C., Michael Qing of Regina and Michael Heath of Golspice, Ont., were fourth, seventh and eighth in the S14.

Competition continues through to Sunday at the Kinsmen Sport Centre.
