The 2008 Paralympic gold medalist Paul Tingley (CAN 99) secured another sweet victory in Holland this past week at the 2.4mR Open World Championships. This event is a true barometer of world class sailing as it is open to both able-bodied and disabled sailors making the fleets ultra-competitive. Tingley proved that he could battle strong against the 83 boat fleet and fought hard right until the last race. His consistency throughout the week was what won out over Sweden’s Stellan Berlin (2nd) and Hans Asklund (3rd). Paul’s first words off the water were “I can’t believe it”!
It’s truly not that hard to believe since the Nova Scotia native is no stranger to sailing success with podium results going back as far as the 2000 Sydney Paralympics, securing a bronze medal in the Sonar class, a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and last year’s 3rd place finish at the 2009 Open World Championships.
Fellow Canadian teammate Bruce Millar (CAN 39) also deserves recognition for his 4th place finish at these championships.
The Canadian Yachting Association would like to congratulate our Paralympic sailors on their world-class performances and look forward to continued success on the road to 2012.
