IPC World Championships in 10 days; final preparation camp underway in Australia

11 January 2011

OTTAWA - The Canadian contingent headed to the 2011 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Championships in Athletics has started the final leg of their journey arriving in Australia for the final preparation camp.  Staged at Sydney Olympic Park, the camp’s objectives are to acclimatize to the time zone, focus on final performance preparation and on establishing a strong team atmosphere.

The camp will end with a Pre-Departure meet hosted by Australia on Friday January 14 with teams competing from Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and the United States.   Team Canada will then make the trip to New Zealand with competition at the 2011 IPC Worlds beginning on January 22nd and ending January 30th.

Team Canada placed 10th with 17 medals (6 Gold, 5 Silver, 6 Bronze) at the last IPC World Championships held in 2006 in Assen, Netherlands.  A number of current team members stepped on the podium in 2006, notably three Canadian athletes enter the event as the defending World IPC champions.  Diane Roy from Sherbrooke, QC is the reigning T54 wheelchair marathon champion.  She also came away from the 2006 championships with silver in the 1500-metres and a bronze in the 5000-metres.  Jason Dunkerley from Ottawa and his guide runner Greg Dailey of Toronto enter as the defending champions in the T11 800 and 1500-metres.  Michelle Stilwell of Nanoose Bay, BC won gold in the T52 200-metres and silver in the 100-metres in 2006.
