Diane Roy is Golden at IAAF World Championships
DAEGU - Diane Roy of Sherbrooke, Que., is the gold medalist in the T54 wheelchair 800-metres at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Daegu, South Korea. Diane raced a tactical two laps capturing the gold in 1:50.91. "Everything went well; the start is important and I kept a good position. The atmosphere was fun, so was competing with the other athletes.”
In the women’s 100-metre hurdles both Phylicia George of Markham, Ont., and Nikkita Holder of Pickering, Ont., qualified into the final with personal best times of 12.73 and 12.84 respectively. In her first World Championship final Nikkita finished in sixth with 12.93 seconds; “I feel great, I made the final at Worlds! I came into the Championships expecting a personal best and I got two, that’s a bonus.”
Phylicia George, also making her first final had a calf cramp and finished the race in 7th. “I am definitely happy! It could have been more but my calf cramped up, I started to feel it in the semis but I was hoping it would be ok. I am seventh in the world and I haven’t even scratched the surface yet.”
Perdita Felicien of Pickering, Ont., did not advance from this morning’s semi final finishing fourth in her heat in 12.88 seconds. “I am disappointed, I feel like the girl that didn’t get invited to the party; I am so used to being a part of the final. I have only been hurdling for two weeks (because of hamstring); I will be hungrier for next year, maybe I needed this kick in the butt.”
Eric Gauthier of St-Faustin Lac-Carre finished eighth in the T53 wheelchair 400-metres. "I was expecting better; I was feeling good in training. I had a fuel shortage at the end. I will work hard towards London 2012.”
The men’s 4x100-metre relay team will line up tomorrow in heat 3 at 19:16 local Daegu time (6:16am eastern time) with the final at 21:00 (8:00am eastern).
