OTTAWA - Canada added 3 medals on day eight of the IPC Athletics World Championships to bring the team total to 12. Jason Dunkerley of Ottawa, ON and guide runner Greg Dailey of Toronto, ON won gold, Diane Roy of Sherbrooke, QC took silver and the Canadian men’s 4x400-metres relay team secured bronze.
In the T11 visually impaired 800-metres Jason Dunkerley and Greg Dailey placed first in 2 minutes 5.89 seconds. Jason’s brother Jon, also of Ottawa, ON, and guide runner Sean Young of Ennismore, ON finished in fourth running 2:10.34.
Diane Roy added silver to her championship count in the T54 wheelchair 400-metres clocking in at 56.90 seconds. Earlier at these championships she won silver in the 1500-metres and took bronze in the 800-metres.
The men’s T53/54 4x400-metres team of Colin Mathieson of Sherbrooke, QC, Eric Gauthier of St-Faustin Lac-Carre, QC, Jean-Paul Compaore of Sherbrooke, QC and Alexandre Dupont of Bradwell, SK crossed the line in 3:29.94 to earn the bronze medal.
In other finals Martha Gustafson of Toronto, ON finished fourth in the F51/52/53 discus throw with a best toss of 9.56-metres. Leah Robinson placed fifth in an area record of 1:12.53 in the T37 400-metres.
Today, the last day of competition at these World Championships, will be highlighted by five Canadians taking part in the marathon. Josh Cassidy of Guelph, ON, Jean-Paul Compaore of Sherbrooke, QC, Michel Filteau of St. Jean Baptiste QC, and Kyle Shaw of Saskatoon, SK will line up in the T54 wheelchair marathon at 8:00am local (2:00pm eastern) time. Diane Roy of Sherbrooke, QC lines up in the women’s marathon just after the men’s start at 8:01 local (2:01pm eastern) time.
