Bronze for Diane Roy on Day 4 of IPC Worlds

OTTAWA – Day 4 of the IPC World Championships was highlighted by a bronze medal performance by Sherbrooke’s Diane Roy.  Roy took bronze in the T54 wheelchair classification 800-metres clocking in at 1 minute 52.88 seconds.  Gold went to American Tatyana McFadden in a championship record time of 1:51.10 with silver going to Liu Wenjun of China in an area record time of 1:51.33. Diane will line up today in the opening heats of the 1500-metres, an event that saw her capture silver at the last edition of these championships in 2006.

  • Jason Dunkerley of Ottawa, ON and guide runner Greg Dailey of Toronto, ON finished 4th in the T11 visually impaired 1500-metres with a time of 4:12.54. Odair Santos of Brazil took gold in a new world record time of 4:04.70.
  • Carleton Place, ON’s Noella Klawitter and guide runner Evan Porter of Port Elgin, ON finished 6th in the T12 1500-metres in 5:32.13, they will both be on the track again today for the start of the T12 400-metre rounds.
  • Saskatoon, SK’s Keira-Lyn Frie placed 6th in the T54 wheelchair 200-metres clocking in at 32.74 seconds.
  • Eric Gauthier of St-Faustin Lac-Carré, QC and Brent Lakatos of Dorval, QC both advanced to the T53 wheelchair 200-metres final which will take place later today.
  • Mississauga, ON’s Curtis Thom qualified for the T54 200-metres final in a time of 26.61 seconds.
  • Jean-Paul Compaore of Sherbrooke, QC qualified in the T54 1500-metres by placing second in his heat in 3:30.55.  Josh Cassidy of Guelph, ON and Michel Filteau of St. Jean Baptiste, QC did not advance clocking in at 3:11.98 and 3:17.30 in their respective heats.
  • Leah Robinson of Petersburg, ON did not advance in the T37 100-metres finishing 6th in her opening heat.
  • Kyle Whitehouse of St. Catharines, ON did not advance in the T38 200-metres finishing 5th in his heat.

“Diane Roy led the day with a bronze medal in the T54 800-metres”; comments Head Coach Ozzie Sawicki. He adds; “A number of athletes moved on in qualifying heats including Curtis Thom who had a strong race in the T54 200-metres; Brent Lakatos and Eric Gauthier in the T53 200-metres and Jean-Paul Compaore in the T54 1500-metres. Kyle Whitehouse finished 9th in the T38 100-metres heats, just missing the final, but it was an overall solid placement for an up and coming athlete.  Wednesday will see podium opportunities for both Lakatos and Michelle Stilwell, as she continues her quest for a T52 women's medal sweep.”

The Canadian team has won 4 medals so far during these World Championships.  Along with Diane’s bronze medal, Michelle Stilwell of Nanoose Bay, BC has earned two gold medals in the T52 100 and 200-metres and Dorval, QC’s Brent Lakatos has a bronze in the T53 100-metres.
