On Monday, Feb 28, the BC Wheelchair Sports Association kicked off the first ever BC Wheelchair Tennis League. Over the next few months, 17 players from the Lower Mainland will battle it out in two round robin pools: advanced and intermediate. Competition will be staged at the Burnaby Tennis Club.
This is the first time that a wheelchair tennis match-play league has existed in BC and organizers are confident that it will increased competitive play opportunities for wheelchair athletes in the province.
“This league will be showcasing everyone from world-ranked athletes such as Sarah Hunter to our up-and-coming junior athletes,” said BCWSA Program Coordinator Holly Tawse. “We’re thrilled with the level of interest players around the province have expressed and it’s shaping up to be a great season.”
National Development coach Kai Schrameyer believes that this league will improve the development of wheelchair tennis across Canada.
“ Tennis Canada is excited to see the launch of this competition,” says Kai Schrameyer, National Development Coach. “Our research strongly suggests that these local playing opportunities are in high demand with players of all levels and we are hoping to gather valuable lessons in BC, so that other provinces can follow up with similar competition formats.”
