Athletics - World and Canadian Records fall in Arbon

OTTAWA – Yesterday in Arbon, Switzerland a team of 14 Canadian para-athletes assaulted the record books by setting two World records and four Canadian records.  The re-writing of the record books was led by Michelle Stilwell of Nanoose Bay, BC; the T52 classification wheelchair racer established a shocking two new World records.  She bettered the 100 metre and 200 metre records she had previously set in 2008 clocking in at 19.52 and 35.82 respectively. Stilwell just narrowly missed the 400 metre world record with a time of 1:08.81, the current record stands from 2005 by Lisa Franks’ time of 1:08.74.

Josh Cassidy of Oakville, ON set new Canadian bests in both the T54 1500 metre and 5000 metres. In the 1500 metres he bettered a mark set back in 2003 while in the 5000 metres he improved his own record by almost 3 full seconds.

Sherbrooke, Quebec’s Jean-Paul Compaore improved the Canadian record he owned in the T54 wheelchair 800 metres. His performance of 1:33.29 was an improvement over the 1:35.43 he set at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, China. Diane Roy, of Hatley, Quebec surpassed Chantal Petitclerc’s Canadian record in the T54 1500m.  Roy’s time of 3:21.39 was an improvement over Petitclerc’s 3:24.23 set in 2007.

·         Alexandre Dupont of Saskatoon, SK - Personal Best in the T54 400m and 800m
·         Michel Filteau of St-Jean Baptiste, QC set a new Personal Best in the T54 1500m
·         Keira Frie of Saskatoon, SK set a Personal Best in the T54 200m
·         Colin Mathieson of Winnipeg, MB established new Personal Bests in the T54 100m, 200m and 400m
·         Curtis Thom of Mississauga, ON set new Personal Bests in the T54 100m and 400m
