Athletics Canada announces 2011 IPC World Championships team

21 September 2010

Athletics Canada announced today a contingent of 33 athletes who will compete at the 2011 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships. Held for the first time outside of Europe, the Championships will take place from January 21 to January 30 in Christchurch, New Zealand.

"This championship will see Canada field a team that has proven itself through solid qualifying performances in 2010," comments Head Coach Ozzie Sawicki. "The World Championships will provide key measures leading to London 2012." Sawicki adds, "We expect to see some key podium performances from a number of athletes and positive performances from key athletes including Diane Roy, Josh Cassidy, Kyle Pettey, Jason Dunkerley, and the 4x400m wheelchair relay team. We also have a number of talented up-and-coming athletes who earned their selection through quality performances; seeing their first major international experience will benefit our teams' progression towards London 2012."

Athlete representative and team member Jason Dunkerley also comments on the selection for the World Championships, "I think our athletes have met and exceeded the expectations of Athletics Canada in performing over and above this year. The bar has been raised and our athletes have responded in kind. The new standards and level of expectation now placed on our athletes makes this team one of the most difficult to make in the world. I think for this reason we are set up very well going into our world championships and leading into 2012."
