2008 Paralympians Kevin Evans (Jaffray, BC) and Norbert Murphy
(Vaudreuil-Dorion, QC will lead a small but strong team of archers to the 2011
World Para-Archery Championships in Torino, Italy, July 10-17.
Evans is
two-time defending World Champion, having struck gold in 2007 and 2009 in the
Men’s Open Compound Bow category. Murphy, a veteran international competitor,
captured the bronze medal at the 2009 World Para-Archery Championships, in the
Men’s ARW1 Compound Bow category.
Late this May, Kevin Evans was named
World Archery’s Athlete of the Week because of his early season success at the
international level. In addition to his World Champion titles, Evans is the
holder of two world records in his category. He also competes in many domestic
and international tournaments against able-bodied competitors.
Evans and
Murphy will be joined by fellow Canadian archers Bob Hudson (Leoville, SK), Lyne
Tremblay (Magog, QC), and Karen Van Nest (Wiarton, ON). Susan Lemke (Abbotsford,
BC) will serve as Team Leader/Head Coach.
Lemke, who has also been
appointed as Head Coach for the 2012 Paralympic Archery Team, believes Canadian
athletes have a good chance of again standing on the podium. “This year’s World
Championships will see a strong and deep field of competitors in all categories.
This will bring out the best in our athletes. We have a quiet confidence going
into these Championships”
Lemke added, “this year’s World Championships
is one of several opportunities this season for our athletes to secure quota
spots for the 2012 Paralympic Games. I am confident our Team will compete well
and therefore secure a number of quota spots.”
