Guadalajara 2011 News
A small, strong team of three archers represented Canada at the recent Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Kevin Evans (Jaffray, BC) and Bob Hudson (Leoville, SK) each defeated strong opponents from the USA to advance to and face-off against one another in the gold match in the Men’s Open Compound category. Evans stood atop the podium while Hudson brought home the silver medal. Rounding out the Canadian Team was Lyne Tremblay (Magog, QC), a 2008 Paralympian. The Canadian Para-cycling Team concluded on a high note its participation at the 2011 Parapan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, winning a total of five medals, including two gold medals that concludes a perfect Games for the women’s tandem of Robbi Weldon and Lyne Bessette. The Canadian Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Team will compete in London at the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games following a 60-42 bronze medal victory over hometown Mexico at the 2011 Parapan American Games. “We had to feel pressure. Canada’s track and field team added three more medals on the final day of competition at the Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico bringing the tally to 16 (8 silver and 8 bronze). The tally matches Canada’s best medal haul at these Games; Canada also won 16 medals at the 2007 Parapan American Games. Day five of competition featured a number of great performances, notably Shayne Dobson of Campbellton, N.B., won the silver medal in the men’s T37 classification 1500-metres. Canada fielded a young developmental swimming team for the Parapan American Games this week and it paid off big time as the squad produced 17 medals and gained valuable international experience as the pool races concluded Saturday. The 20 member squad, which had an average age of 18, earned three gold, six silver and eight bronze over seven days to rank sixth in the swimming medal standings and was one of the highest medal producing sports for Canada at the Games with one day remaining for some sports on Sunday. As the IV Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, officially come to an end, I would like to congratulate all of our Canadian competitors, as well as all the coaches, officials, and everyone who helped support Team Canada over the last two weeks. Our athletes demonstrated skill and determination, and many of their outstanding performances resulted in spectacular podium finishes. Their combined efforts allowed Canada to achieve a 5th place ranking in the final standings. This is a wonderful accomplishment of which we all can be proud. GUADALAJARA, Nov. 20 – The two top-performing Canadian athletes at the Guadalajara Parapan American Games – cyclists Robbi Weldon (Thunder Bay, ON) and Lyne Bessette (Knowlton, QC) have been named Canada’s flag bearers for the closing ceremony tonight.
The dominant duo won gold in all four races for women’s tandem cycling at these Games, with Bessette acting as pilot for Weldon, who has a visual impairment.
