Canadian Paralympic Committee statement on the decision to re-run the 5000m race

09 September 2008

BEIJING (Sept. 9, 2008) - The Canadian Paralympic Committee has been monitoring the protest around the women's T54 5000m race to ensure the interests of the Canadian athletes involved are protected.

For the past 24 hours, the Canadian Paralympic Committee has been actively seeking assurances that proper procedures and processes were followed by the international governing bodies. At this point, while it appears the established appeal and protest procedures have been followed, not all of the supporting documentation has been received.

The Canadian team is particularly disappointed the medal ceremony was held prior to the resolution of the protest.

"We have urged BOCOG and the IPC to improve communication between the personnel handling protests and those running the medal ceremonies," said Canadian team Chef de Mission Debbie Low. "It's unacceptable that our athlete was presented with the gold medal, when the results of the race were not yet official."

The Canadian Paralympic Committee is now turning its attention to supporting Diane Roy and Tracey Ferguson as they focus on re-running the 5000m race.
