The Canadian Athlete Family Program was created by Suncor
Energy to address the additional pressure that athletes face to look after
family members who attend the Games, whether they are financial or logistical
issues. To help alleviate this
distraction for athletes, the Canadian Athlete Family Program enabled two
family members of every Canadian athlete to be hosted at both the Olympic and
Paralympic Games. Accommodations, meals, ground transportation, clothing and
gifting were all provided by Suncor Energy, as well as tickets to watch their
family members compete. A special lounge
was also set-up in each hotel to provide a home away from home feeling for all
participants.
“The Petro-Canada
Athlete Family Program was very special. My family was able to watch me
compete at a home Games and I was never worried about their well-being,” said
Tyler Mosher, Nordic skier at the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. “I
just want to say thank you to Suncor Energy for going above and beyond to
provide my family with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. My family had the
greatest experience and sincerely appreciated the incredible hospitality of Suncor
Energy and its many wonderful volunteers.”
Executed at
both Paralympic and Olympic Winter Games and developed in conjunction with the
Canadian Paralympic Committee, the Canadian Olympic Committee, and the
Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
(VANOC), the Petro-Canada Canadian Athlete Family Program provided two members
of an athlete’s immediate family with a truly memorable experience.
“As a sponsor
since 1999, Suncor
Energy is one of the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s longest standing supporters
and is a true champion of sport for all ages and abilities,” said Henry Storgaard, Chief Executive Officer for the
Canadian Paralympic Committee. “In
addition to the Canadian Athlete Family Program, they support the Canadian
Paralympic Team through several initiatives including the It’s the Real Deal Paralympic Schools Program
and the Paralympic Equipment Fund. Congratulations on this well-deserved Award.”
The Canadian Paralympic Committee
would like to thank Suncor Energy for going above and beyond in their support of the
families of Canadian athletes and congratulates them on receiving this
recognition.
