Introduction
General Overview;
1988 Winter Paralympic Games – Innsbruck, Austria
The 1988 Paralympic Winter Games were again
held in Innsbruck, Austria, from January 17 to 24. The Paralympics were not
held at the same Olympic venue in Calgary, Canada, because of financial and
recruiting difficulties. A total of 397 athletes from 22 countries took part in
these Games. The USSR competed at a Paralympic Games for the first time.
Sit-skiing was introduced as another event in both the Alpine and Nordic
competitions.

8.4.12.1.2 Canadian Team Highlights – Innsbruck, Austria,
1988
The 1988 Winter Games were exciting and
rewarding for all Canadian participants. A 20-member Canadian ski team won a
total of 13 medals (5 gold, 3 silver, and 5 bronze), finishing in 8th
position in the final rankings.
Canada competed in 2 of 4 sports; Alpine
and Cross-country skiing were included and Ice Sledge Speed Racing and Biathlon were not.
Overall, the medal count was lower than for
the 1986 World Championships in Sweden, due partly to the fact that no combined
medals were awarded at Innsbruck. Competition was also tougher and there were a
number of 4th and 5th place finishes for Canadian racers
with time less than a second off the medal pace in some cases.
At the end of the Games, the Canadian team
was invited to choose someone to speak on behalf of all of the athletes at the
closing ceremony and Sandra Lecour was nominated for the task.
The Chef de mission was Hugh Glynn.
